Brakes at DEVCO Renault

Brakes Enquiry Book a Service

Brakes are key to your driving safety, but we are often asked questions about brakes feeling spongy, taking longer to stop or even grinding noises from the front or rear brakes. You and your car or van are welcome to visit DEVCO Renault fora  free brake safety check at any time if you are concerned with your braking performance.

DEVCO Renault make a visual check of your brake discs and pads every time your car or van comes to our workshop for servicing, MOT, repair, warranty or diagnostic work. On a service we also measure the actual thickness of the brake disc and brake pads and compare that to the minimum thickness standard to advise you on wear and the replacement interval to keep you safe on the road. We also check the condition of your brake fluid and for any leaks from brake hoses, and condition of handbrake cables – all for your peace of mind.

It is important to change brake pads when they are near their minimum thickness to avoid unexpected brake failure. Replacing your brake pads before they completely wear to the metal brake pad backing extends the life of your brake disc, saves you money in the long run and keeps you safe on the road

We have worked hard to offer great value for money, peace of mind and reassurance for braking safety. At DEVCO we have a fixed price brake pad offer from £89 fitted, our fixed price offer if you need brake pads and discs fitted is from £250

BRAKE DISCS

A metal brake disc (made from cast iron) is mounted on the wheel hub, when the brake pedal is pressed the disc is clamped on both sides by two brake pads which are housed in brake callipers.

Brake discs are wearing parts, so need to be checked for thickness and surface condition and are generally replaced every second or third time the brake pads are replaced, but can be damaged by worn out brake pads. Brake discs are always replaced in pairs to provide equal stopping performance on both sides of your vehicle. Brake pads must always be changed when brake discs are replaced to ensure a good “bite” – as brake pads will be worn or grooved by the previous set of brake discs, which is why DEVCO Renault have a fixed price offer for brake pads and discs.

BRAKE PADS

Brake pads are in direct contact with the brake discs and during braking the brake pad may reach temperatures of more than 800°C. Their quality is therefore essential.

Renault approved brake pads can resist high temperatures, and give a good “bite” on the brake disc which ultimately slows and stops your car or loaded van. How long a brake pad lasts depends on the type of vehicle, the type of journeys made and the driving style. Brake pads must therefore be checked regularly. Your vehicle is always welcome at DEVCO Renault for a free brake check.

DRUM BRAKES

Drum brakes are generally mounted on the rear wheels. When the driver presses the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure is applied to the pistons in the wheel cylinders. The rear brake drums wear with the friction applied by the shoes, so that they end up scored or gouged, but generally they can be rectified. Drum brakes are fitted to some Twingo and Clio models.

BRAKE FLUID

Brake fluid transfers the mechanical force applied from the brake pedal to the brake pistons. The pressure of the brake fluid moves the hydraulic pistons that push the brake pads against the discs. Working in a closed circuit, the brake fluid needs to be incompressible while resisting the build-up of heat during braking so as not to boil.

Brake fluid also absorbs water, from humidity present in the air. The amount of water in brake fluid must never exceed 3.5%. It is very important the right brake fluid is used, and the system properly bled and checked for leaks. Brake fluid requires changing every 3 years on cars and 4 years on vans. There are different types available which must not be mixed - so always trust DEVCO Renault to replace your brake fluid.

BRAKING SYSTEM TECHNOLOGY

Renault has pioneered advanced braking systems, including Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Electronic Brake Variation (EBV) but these brake systems depend on brake fluid coping with high temperatures and your brake pads and brake discs (or brake drums and shoes) working efficiently under high pressure and temperatures to safely bring your car or van to a stop every time.

Check your vehicle handbook if you are not sure which type of brakes are fitted to your vehicle.

ABS (ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM)

In the event of sudden braking, the "Anti-Lock Braking" system works on the front and rear brakes to ensure that the vehicle will remain steerable, retain directional stability and achieve maximum deceleration. When ABS acts, the driver feels pumping from the brake pedal while the corresponding indicator on the dashboard lights up. Together, these two signals prove that the system is operating properly.

If you have an ABS warning light on your dashboard, it means there is a fault which needs diagnosing and repairing - DEVCO Renault have the latest diagnostic equipment and we can arrange a "while you wait" appointment. Click here to book an appointment with our trained Renault Service Technicians or call 01884 254318 to speak to one of our Service Advisors.

Remember a brake warning light on the dashboard will cause a vehicle to fail its MOT.

ESC (ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL)

ESC lets the driver retain control over their vehicle under critical situations: avoiding an obstacle, loss of adherence through a curve, driving on snow... This system acts on the brakes on one or more wheels and on engine torque, to bring the vehicle back to the line chosen by the driver.

If you have an ESC warning light on your dashboard, it means there is a fault which needs diagnosing and repairing - DEVCO Renault have the latest diagnostic equipment and we can arrange a "while you wait" appointment. Click here to book an appointment with our trained Renault Service Technicians or call 01884 254318 to speak to one of our Service Advisors.

EBV (ELECTRONIC BRAKE VARIATION)

EBV distributes the braking force between the front and rear wheels according to load. It adapts to vehicle loading and to braking circumstances.
